Photonic Power

JDSU delivers optical innovation through its photonic power product line, a revolutionary alternative to existing power delivery solutions.  Our core technology is a multi-segmented solid state chip that converts laser light into electrical power more efficiently than any other photovoltaic device available today.

Optical power generated by a laser diode is delivered to our proprietary photovoltaic power converter (PPC) over noise immune, non-conductive optical fiber to provide up to one watt of power at voltages from 2 to 12 VDC.   Where necessary, the optical power can be transmitted in free space rather than over fiber.

The resulting electrically-isolated power can be used to drive remotely-located sensors, gauges, actuators, and low power transceivers and transponders over long distances with minimal attenuation.

High photovoltaic conversion efficiency (up to 50%) makes photonic power a cost effective means of delivering power where immunity from RF, EMI, high voltage, and lighting effects are essential.

This core photonic power technology, packaged in our Photonic Power Module (PPM) delivers a comprehensive solution that includes the laser, laser driver, heat sink package, system calibration, warranty, and support.

For increased power, our HiPOD product offers multiple power channels to provide up to 5 watts of electrical output power.
